Handshake Puzzle - Hint

The beautiful thing about his puzzle is that it seems at first that there can't possibly be enough information to solve it. But there is.

Here's a start: Consider the person who shook 8 hands. Whose hands did that person shake? How many hands (at least) did each of those people shake?

Now go back to the person who shook 8 hands. How many hands did that person's spouse shake?

Next consider the person who shook 7 hands . . .
